Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986), starting in 1952. Hubbard initially developed a program of ideas called Dianetics, distributed through the Dianetics Foundation. The foundation soon entered bankruptcy, and Hubbard lost the rights to his seminal publication Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1952. He then recharacterized the subject as a religion and renamed it Scientology, retaining the terminology, doctrines, the E-meter, and the auditing practice. Within a year, he regained the rights to Dianetics and retained both subjects under the umbrella of the Church of Scientology.

Hubbard describes the etymology of the word “Scientology” as coming from the Latin word “scio,” meaning know or distinguish, and from the Greek word “logos,” meaning “the study of.” Shares of knowledge or wisdom. Therefore, Scientology means knowing about knowing. As velvety PR voice Jessica Rodriguez says in this short video made by the Church, Scientology is “the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life.”

The Basics of Scientology
Scientology is based on two main principles: (1) The belief that man is an immortal spiritual being with certain inherent abilities, and (2) his ability to improve his conditions by using those abilities.

According to Hubbard, man’s spirit consists of three parts: Thetans, immortal beings that have existed forever; MEST, which stands for Matter Energy Space Time; and minds, which are recordings by Thetans about their experiences in MEST. Thetan + MEST = A being; therefore, A = beingness or the total sum of one’s experience as a spiritual being having a human experience. Man’s ability to improve his conditions lies in his spiritual nature, and he can achieve this by applying Scientology principles in his daily life.
By doing so, he can eventually rid himself of all limitations and attain total freedom and immortality.

Scientology has three main components: auditing, training, and counseling. Auditing is a form of spiritual counseling in which an auditor guides an individual through a series of meetings to address painful experiences from his past that may be keeping him trapped in negative patterns. Training involves learning how to apply Scientology principles in one ‘s daily life so that one can eventually become an auditor himself. Counseling consists of guidance Church staff provides on improving specific areas of one ‘s life using it’s principles.

While some people view it as a cult, others see it as a religion that offers them a path to personal improvements. Whether you believe in its precepts or not, there is no denying that Scientology has had an impact on popular culture, and its influence continues to grow. If you are curious about what Scientology is all about, I hope this short overview has given you a better understanding of its basics. Thanks for reading!
