Offering a variety of cosmetic procedures and surgeries, established and well-respected physician Dr. Hadi Michael Rassael is based in Friendship Heights Village, Chevy Chase, Maryland and serves individuals in and around the Chevy Chase area and further afield. Here, Dr. Rassael offers his professional insight into the application and benefits of Botox and other cosmetic neuromodulators.

“Neuromodulators, such as Botox, and other forms of injectable cosmetic treatment, including dermal fillers, continue to grow in popularity in the United States,” explains Dr. Rassael.

Indeed, such treatments accounted for more than 10 million cosmetic procedures last year in the U.S. according to figures published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. “Botox and other, similar neuromodulators contain a scientifically developed substance formulated to paralyze muscles,” Dr. Rassael continues, “which can help to significantly minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, predominantly caused by facial expressions, often referred to as ‘laughter lines,’ ‘expression lines,’ or, more formally, ‘dynamic wrinkles.'”

By blocking nerve signals in the muscles into which the treatment is injected, lines and wrinkles are softened, reduced, or—quite often, according to Dr. Rassael—completely eliminated. “By temporarily paralyzing the muscle or muscles responsible for causing obvious lines or wrinkles, those same perceived imperfections are effectively banished,” he adds, pointing out that, while highly effective, Botox and other neuromodulators only affect lines caused by muscle movement, and not solely by aging.

“Botox and similar solutions are most widely used to treat the forehead, the area between the brows, and so-called ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes,” Dr. Rassael reveals, “all of which are most commonly caused by normal, day-to-day facial expressions.”

For ‘static wrinkles,’ however, neuromodulators are largely ineffective, according to the expert, with lines or wrinkles caused by the normal aging process calling for dermal fillers instead. “Unlike with Botox, lines and wrinkles on the cheeks, neck, and around the mouth should be addressed using dermal fillers to restore a look of fullness,” adds Dr. Rassael, “although, again, these are largely ineffective in the areas where neuromodulators are best used.”

It’s important, therefore, he says, that patients seek the advice of a qualified and experienced professional in order to ascertain the best and most effective cosmetic procedure or procedures for their own individual circumstances.

“The effects of Botox and other cosmetic neuromodulators typically last for around four months,” Dr. Rassael adds, wrapping up, “after which time, the process may be repeated as the patient wishes.”
