Dr. Scott Zack Explores Latest Research Surrounding Chiropractics

With demand for chiropractic care growing in the United States, chiropractor Dr. Scott Zack explores the latest research and reports surrounding the practice.

With demand for chiropractic care growing year on year in the U.S., chiropractor Dr. Scott Zack explores a series of recent studies and reports into the positive effects and other benefits of the practice carried out and published by organizations including The Spine Journal, the Open Access Journal of the American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Zack first points toward a recent study published in the Open Access Journal of the American Medical Association. “They discovered that members of the U.S. military who utilized chiropractics alongside their usual medical care for lower back pain experienced much better results than fellow service members who opted not to utilize the same level of treatment,” he reveals of the study.

The report found ‘clinically meaningful and statistically significant improvements’ in back-related function among those who were studied having undergone chiropractic care, with 62.6% reporting a notable and worthwhile improvement following treatment. This compares to just 46.6% among those who opted out, receiving only their usual medical care for lower back complaints.

“An improvement in pain was also noted,” highlights Dr. Zack, “equivalent to 57.5% for those who received chiropractic care versus just 32.5% among those who did not.”

Another notable report recently completed by The Spine Journal—the official journal of the North American Spine Society—further examined the effectiveness of chiropractic care in the treatment of lower back pain. “The authors of the study,” Dr. Zack explains, “found that chiropractic care improved both pain and function for a period of several weeks or months, echoing the findings of the study published in the Open Access Journal of the American Medical Association.”

An additional study by The Spine Journal, which is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering research related to the spine, completed in 2018 and including 17 years of insight into chiropractic care on chronic lower back pain, was similarly positive. “Here, the authors concluded that spinal manipulation and mobilization were both entirely viable options for effective pain management,” adds Dr. Zack.

Accordingly, the American College of Physicians today recommends that those suffering with lower back pain look to seek out a variety of ‘non-pharmacological treatments,’ including chiropractic care.

“Beyond lower back pain,” Dr. Scott Zack adds, wrapping up, “chiropractic medicine is also an excellent pain relief alternative for other forms of back and neck pain, as well as joint, bone, muscle, ligament, cartilage, and tendon discomfort, and can typically be applied in tandem with other medical treatments.”
