The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for many people to seek the education they need. Whether it’s students learning their state-required curriculum or it’s employees looking to better themselves, traditional classrooms are being canceled. Even when classrooms are opening, many are choosing a safer alternative. This is where former Columbia Dean Tom Harford explains the benefits of eLearning.

Rather than having to go into a classroom where there is the possibility of having to come into close contact with individuals, former Columbia Dean Tom Harford explains how eLearning can be an effective alternative. Many of the same curriculums offered in the classroom can also be offered online. A person is told when the class is, and they log on using a designated link.

Tom Harford, a consultant who speaks openly about the benefits of virtual learning, has worked with individuals and corporations alike. He identifies how eLearning can be used as a way to maintain social distancing.

Tom Harford identifies that there are two main forms of eLearning: live and pre-recorded. Live instruction allows a person to learn from a teacher in real-time. Pre-recorded courses allow a person to choose a time that works for them to obtain instruction.

No one should have to put their learning on hold simply because of the pandemic, former Columbia Dean Tom Harford explains. With eLearning, a person can still enjoy many of the same benefits as being in a classroom. They can receive a lecture from the teacher, engage in discussions with class members, and even use various online collaboration tools to work on projects with other students.

According to former Columbia Dean Tom Harford, many students are able to do better in an online format. It ensures they choose a time that works for their schedule. Further, they can pause and rewind lectures to better grasp the content. Those who grasp the content quicker can also move onto the next lesson without feeling as though the class is holding them back.

Particularly with the pandemic, there are limits to the number of people who can be in a classroom. As such, eLearning is beneficial when there are large numbers of people who need to be trained in a particular topic. This can be anything from a large classroom of students to a large corporation that needs to train dozens (or even hundreds) of employees at a time.

Thomas Harford explains that no one needs to feel as though they have to put their learning on hold due to the pandemic. As long as people have an internet connection, they have the means of being educated. Thomas Harford recommends that individuals and corporations work with a consultant to explore the options based on what content needs to be learned and how many people will be participating in an individual lesson.
