Iowa is surprisingly home to some of the most beautiful waterways in the United States. With such a large variety of lakes and rivers to choose from, outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels travel near and far to enjoy canoeing and kayaking. This outdoor activity can be very relaxing and provide a great workout.

As a busy politician and lobbyist, Craig Schoenfeld knows how important it is to kick back and relax. After canoeing through Iowa’s large network of water trails, Craig Schoenfeld recommends a few beautiful trails that are a must see.

  1. The Upper Iowa River

As a tributary to the Mississippi River, the Upper Iowa River is one of the most popular destinations in the state of Iowa. It is set apart from other locations due to the magnificent limestone bluffs, which reach 330 feet high. Advanced paddlers prefer starting their journey at Lime Springs or Florenceville. Most people, however, begin at Kendallville, where you can also rent kayaks and canoes.

  1. Saylorville Lake

This lovely reservoir is approximately ten miles from Des Moines, and is a popular outdoor recreation destination for canoeing, swimming, fishing, camping, biking, wildlife watching, hiking, and boating. This lake area is 26,000 acre and also includes woodlands, wetlands, and prairie habitats. Not only is the area beautiful, but it due to the wide variety of activities offered, it’s a one stop shop for everyone in the family. Be sure to check out the only floating restaurant while you’re there, Latitude 41 Bar & Grill.

  1. Lake Ahquabi

Located at Lake Ahquabi State Park, this destination has a sandy beach area and two boat ramps. You can also rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards before calling it a night to make camp. For those who like to fish, this spot has twice the average catch rate!
