This book explored the cultural heritage of Arnold’s family. The book provided a powerful degree of insight into how a person of color lived during 19th century America. Obviously, the 19th century was a time period of tremendous change in the United States. While most people think about the Civil War, racism and discrimination did not end with the Civil War. This is where the perspectives of not only Matt Muller New Orleans but particularly Al Arnold become poignant.

While Matt Muller New Orleans is used to lecturing to full auditoriums given his career as a teacher, even he was surprised at the attendance at the lecture. The lecture was sold out. There were additional tickets that were sold as standing room only. Clearly, the crowd was satisfied. Matt Muller noticed that the crowd was a vibrant, diverse group of people. This is inspiring because it shows that everyone wants to learn more about the history of this country so that they can improve the identity of this country moving forward.
