It takes more than talent to succeed in football. To make it in the big leagues, athletes need drive, dedication, and passion. Football coach Andy Townsend knows this better than most. Over the past 14 years, Michel Andy Townsend has built an illustrious career in football coaching, assisting, and operations throughout Texas and Tennessee, and even coaching some players who’ve gone on to play in the NFL. He says one of the best investments a young athlete can make in their future is attending a football camp. Here are some of his top picks.

4 Football Camps for High School Players

  1. NFL Prep 100 Series : You can’t get more prestigious than the NFL’s own camp. The Prep 100 Series is only one day, but attendees can learn a lot in this short amount of time. The camp takes place at NFL teams’ facilities around the country and teaches about safety and leadership, as well as coaching tips.
  2. Football University :Football University is also a nationwide camp comprised of NFL coaches and small groups of players. There are more than 40 locations around the country which attract thousands of players every year. Some noteworthy alumni include Marcus Mariota, Terrelle Pryor, Bryce Brown, and Sharrif Floyd.
  3. 1UP : 1UP is offered for players of all ages and positions. This intense camp helps players dig deep to improve their weak points while honing strengths. Each player receives advice based on their particular talents and position. Skills taught include footwork, route running, speed tests, defensive techniques, and QB challenges.
  4. VTO Sports Combine: The VTO Sports Combine is a bit different from some of the other camps, but participation is well worthwhile if you have the chops. When high school prospects arrive at the combine, they’re given the opportunity to prove they have what it takes to be a college-level player. The test includes a 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, and L-Drill.
