Automotive industry professional and breast cancer awareness advocate Rahim Hassanally reveals details of this year’s upcoming National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With 2019 now well underway, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is fast on the approach. Held each year during the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has recognized the world over. A devoted advocate for breast cancer awareness based between California and Texas, automotive industry professional Rahim Hassanally reveals more about the annual initiative.

“National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease,” reveals Hassanally, “and to raise funds for research into the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and cure of breast cancer.”

Known in the United States as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and elsewhere simply as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event is further recognized as Mes de Sensibilización Sobre el Cáncer de Mama, Brustkrebs-Bewusstseins-Monat, and Mois de sensibilisation au dépistage du cancer du sein, among many other regional, national, and international translations and variations upon the name from around the globe.

“National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and its variations together form a yearly campaign designed to educate the public, particularly surrounding the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection,” Hassanally explains. The campaign starts, he adds, each year on October 1st, and finishes on October 31st.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was originally established in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical arm of British chemical company Imperial Chemical Industries. Founded in London, England in the 1920s by Alfred Mond, Imperial Chemical Industries is today part of AstraZeneca, a producer of numerous leading anti-breast cancer medications.

“Since the very beginning, one of the main goals of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been to promote the importance of mammography,” explains Hassanally, “which, even today, remains the most effective tool in the fight against breast cancer both in the United States and globally.”

Activities and events held as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month include various one-day, two-day, and three-day-long sponsored walks across the United States and Canada, as well as the National Race for the Cure, first held in Dallas, Texas, more than 30 years ago. “The first National Race for the Cure event attracted some 800 participants,” reveals Hassanally, “while today, millions now take part across more than 100 U.S. cities each year.”

All such activities and events are held to raise funds for breast cancer research institutes, as well as to further promote awareness of the disease.

This year’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins on Tuesday, October 1st, 2019. For more information, please visit the National Breast Cancer Foundation website at https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-awareness-month/.
