Former UC Berkeley registrar and director of admissions Robert Bailey looks back on his U.S. Air Force service.

Robert Bailey, from Lafayette, California, spent three decades in the U.S. Air Force, both on active duty and on reserve duty. Here, Bailey, a former registrar and director of admissions at UC Berkeley in Berkeley, California, reflects on his time in the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces.

“As a member of the U.S. Air Force, I was assigned as a special agent in the Office of Special Investigation,” Bailey explains. One of the seven American uniformed services, the U.S. Air Force is headquartered at The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia.

Robert Bailey began his uniformed services career after graduating from the University of Washington in ROTC and taking up the position of second lieutenant – the entry-level rank for most commissioned officers in the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Marine Corps.

Bailey attended the Office of Special Investigation school in Washington, D.C., after which he was assigned to Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. He later served overseas in Korea before being transferred from active duty to reserve duty at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington, approximately ten miles southwest of Spokane. “During this time, I served at various Air Force bases, including Scott Air Force Base in St. Clair County, Illinois, Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, and Travis Air Force Base in Solano County, California,” adds Bailey, a former registrar and director of admissions at UC Berkeley.

The former UC Berkeley registrar and director of admissions also attended Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama. His last assignment was as Military Assistant to the Commander while stationed at Wiesbaden Air Force Base, Germany. “I retired a full colonel,” Bailey adds, “with several decorations in July 1992.”

Elsewhere in his professional life, Robert Bailey has served as registrar and director of admissions at UC Berkeley in Berkeley, California, director of registration at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and director of admissions and records at Governors State University in Park Forest South, Illinois.

Bailey has also lived and worked in Singapore, Southeast Asia. “I accepted the first of four different contracts in Singapore after retiring with 20 years in admissions and records at UC Berkeley,” he explains.

Former UC Berkeley registrar and director of admissions Bailey was based in Singapore from 1992-1998. Here, he served as the dean of the American College before transferring to Temanick Polytechnic, then to the International School of Business and Commerce, and, finally, to a leading transnational company.

“While in Singapore, I also taught regular workshops, seminars, and courses,” adds Bailey, wrapping up, “in records management, marketing, and customer service.”
